Lesotho Electricity Generation Company Board Visits Ramarothole Solar Power Plant
The Board of Directors of the Lesotho Electricity Generation Company (LEGCO) recently conducted a familiarisation tour at the Ramarothole Solar Power Plant to gain insights into its operations and the benefits it has brought to the country. The visit was led by the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Mabafokeng Mahahabisa, and guided by the Solar Manager, Mr. Phetho Sebatana, along with Principal Engineer, Mr. Sebajoa Tau.
During the tour, board members engaged in discussions on key aspects of the plant’s operations, including the amount of electricity generated and distributed to the national grid. They were also briefed on the challenges faced by the plant, the successes achieved since its inception, and ongoing preparations for the second phase of the project.
Mr. Sebatana and Mr. Tau provided detailed explanations on the plant’s day-to-day management, highlighting its contribution to the country’s energy sector. They emphasized how the facility has significantly reduced reliance on imported electricity, ensuring a more stable and sustainable power supply for Lesotho. The board members expressed keen interest in understanding how the plant has enhanced energy security and supported the country’s transition to renewable energy sources.
Additionally, the visit allowed the board to interact with key technical personnel who oversee the plant’s operations. These experts elaborated on the advanced solar technology being used, the efficiency of the photovoltaic panels, and the strategies employed to maximize energy output. The discussions also touched on the challenges encountered, such as weather-related disruptions, maintenance requirements, and efforts to enhance operational efficiency.
Among the notable achievements highlighted was the plant’s role in reducing Lesotho’s carbon footprint by lowering dependency on fossil-fuel-based energy imports. The tour also emphasized the economic benefits brought about by the project, including job creation and skills development for local communities.
Furthermore, the delegation explored plans for Phase II of the project, which aims to expand solar power generation capacity to meet growing electricity demand. The upcoming phase is expected to further strengthen Lesotho’s commitment to renewable energy, contributing to the country’s long-term sustainability goals. The board members acknowledged the significance of these advancements and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the continued success of the Ramarothole Solar Power Plant in advancing Lesotho’s energy independence.
As Lesotho continues to invest in renewable energy, the LEGCO Board emphasized the importance of continued government and stakeholder support in maintaining and expanding green energy initiatives. The familiarisation tour provided valuable insights and reinforced the board’s determination to support clean energy projects that will drive Lesotho’s socio-economic development forward.
