As part of its commitment to working closely with stakeholders, the Lesotho Electricity Generation Company (LEGCO) has been conducting a series of public gatherings with communities in preparation for the implementation of Phase II of the Ramarothole Solar Power Plant in Mafeteng.
The community engagement sessions form an integral part of LEGCO’s stakeholder participation programme and are aimed at ensuring that local communities are well informed about the project and have an opportunity to contribute to its successful implementation.
During the meetings, LEGCO has engaged residents on a wide range of issues, including the project’s technical aspects, environmental and social management measures, anticipated construction activities, and the potential impacts the project may have on surrounding communities. The sessions have also provided a platform for community members to ask questions, raise concerns, and receive accurate information directly from the project team.
One of the major issues consistently raised by community members is the recruitment of local labour once construction begins. Residents have emphasized the importance of a fair, transparent, and inclusive recruitment process that provides employment opportunities for people living in the affected communities.
LEGCO acknowledged the concerns raised by the communities and assured residents that their views are being taken seriously. The company reaffirmed its commitment to working collaboratively with the contractor, local leadership, and relevant stakeholders to promote a transparent recruitment process while ensuring that all employment opportunities are managed in accordance with the project’s policies and applicable regulations.
LEGCO believes that meaningful community engagement is essential to the success of Phase II of the Ramarothole Solar Power Plant. By maintaining open communication and fostering strong partnerships with local communities, the company aims to ensure that the project delivers lasting social and economic benefits while contributing to Lesotho’s renewable energy goals and long-term energy security.
