LEGCO to Launch Phase II of the Ramarothole Solar Power Project

The Ministry of Energy and Mining, through the Lesotho Electricity Generation Company (LEGCO), will officially launch Phase II of the Ramarothole Solar Power Project in Mafeteng on 10 July 2026, marking another significant milestone in Lesotho’s transition towards a secure and sustainable energy future.

Phase II will add 50 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy generation capacity to the existing 30MW produced by Phase I, increasing the total installed capacity of the Ramarothole Solar Power Plant to 80MW.

The expansion will also introduce an 8 megawatt-hour (MWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which will store excess electricity generated during the day for use during the evening and periods of peak demand. This addition will enhance the reliability and stability of electricity supply while strengthening the country’s overall energy security.

The project forms part of the Government of Lesotho’s ongoing efforts to achieve energy self-sufficiency by increasing domestic electricity generation, reducing dependence on imported power, and supporting sustainable economic growth through clean, renewable energy.

The official launch is expected to bring together representatives from government, the energy sector, development partners, local communities, and other key stakeholders to celebrate this important achievement and reaffirm their shared commitment to advancing renewable energy development in Lesotho.

The implementation of Phase II further demonstrates LEGCO’s commitment to delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity while contributing to national development and the country’s long-term energy aspirations.
