Chinese Ambassador Commends Lesotho’s Renewable Energy Ambitions

The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Kingdom of Lesotho, Mr. Yang Xiaokun, has expressed his delight at participating in the launch and sod-turning ceremony of Phase II of the Ramarothole Solar Power Plant, describing the project as another milestone in the growing partnership between China and Lesotho.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Yang said he was honoured to witness the commencement of a project that will contribute significantly to Lesotho’s renewable energy development and energy security.

The Ambassador revealed that shortly after presenting his credentials to His Majesty King Letsie III, he travelled extensively throughout all ten districts of Lesotho. During his visits, he observed that the country’s abundant sunshine is one of its greatest natural resources and presents enormous potential for clean energy generation.

He noted that Lesotho’s rich solar resource makes cooperation between China and Lesotho in renewable energy both meaningful and strategic, adding that the Ramarothole Solar Power Plant is a clear demonstration of the strong bilateral partnership between the two countries.

Addressing the contractor, the Sinoma–Tebea Consortium, Ambassador Yang encouraged the company to build on the success of Phase I by delivering an even higher standard of excellence during the construction of Phase II. He expressed confidence that the consortium possesses the expertise and experience required to complete the project successfully and within the stipulated timeframe.

The Ambassador also appealed to all Government ministries, departments, agencies, and other stakeholders to provide the necessary support and cooperation to the contractor throughout the implementation period. He stressed that close collaboration among all parties will be essential to ensuring that the project is completed efficiently, on schedule, and to the highest quality standards.

He concluded by expressing optimism that the successful completion of Phase II will further strengthen the longstanding friendship between China and Lesotho while making a lasting contribution to the Kingdom’s sustainable development and energy independence.
