Prime Minister Reaffirms Government’s Commitment to Energy Security at Ramarothole Phase II Launch
Prime Minister Hon Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane has commended the Sinoma–Tebea Consortium for the successful construction and commissioning of Phase I of the Ramarothole Solar Power Plant, expressing confidence that the contractor will deliver the same high standards of professionalism and quality during the implementation of Phase II.
Speaking during the launch and sod-turning ceremony of Phase II, the Prime Minister praised the consortium for its contribution to Lesotho’s renewable energy sector and encouraged it to maintain the level of excellence demonstrated during the first phase of the project.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the longstanding and cordial relationship between the Kingdom of Lesotho and the People’s Republic of China, noting that the partnership has continued to yield tangible development benefits for the country. He emphasized that the collaboration between the two nations remains instrumental in supporting key infrastructure projects and expressed optimism that even greater achievements can be realized through continued cooperation.
Highlighting the Government’s vision for the country’s energy future, Prime Minister Matekane reaffirmed that achieving energy self-sufficiency remains one of the Government’s highest priorities. He said increasing domestic electricity generation is essential for economic growth, industrial development, job creation, and improving the livelihoods of Basotho.
To achieve this goal, he revealed that the Government is undertaking additional feasibility studies to identify suitable locations and technologies for electricity generation in other parts of the country. These initiatives, he said, will diversify Lesotho’s energy sources, strengthen the national electricity supply, and reduce dependence on imported power.
The Prime Minister noted that the expansion of the Ramarothole Solar Power Plant represents a significant step towards building a resilient, sustainable, and secure energy sector that will support the country’s long-term development aspirations.
